Just under a third (30%) of UK line manager respondents are frustrated with their organisation’s HR department when it comes to helping employees avoid stress, according to research by IDC and Cornerstone OnDemand.

The Future people: workplace evolution in the age of digital transformation report, which surveyed 1,352 HR professionals and line managers across 16 European countries, also found that the UK is ranked within the bottom four in terms of average adoption of flexible working policies.

The research also found:

  • 71% of UK respondents are proud of their workplace and are willing to recommend it to others.
  • 28% of UK line manager respondents are frustrated with their HR department for not supplying a useful talent management system.
  • 35% of UK line manager respondents cite employee performance analytics as a key area for improvement.

Vincent Belliveau, executive vice president and general manager of Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Cornerstone OnDemand, said: “The findings are sobering and show us that we must continually evaluate and improve our ways of working. If UK [organisations] want to remain competitive they must ingrain a culture of more collaboration, as well as provide the tools to make this happen wherever that employee may be based.

“Likewise, it’s vital HR and line managers understand each other in order to navigate these changes. There are already frustrations showing while the UK is in the early stages of having a fully flexible workforce and this will only get worse without clearer talent management strategies. Organisations need to invest in the systems and practices that will support this going forward, and must understand the range of flexible working options staff may require. Ignore that, and they face an unhappy and disengaged workforce, which will almost certainly be a bigger problem in the long run.”
