Around a fifth (21%) of millennial respondents do not take a lunch break, according to research by Morgan McKinley.
The Morgan McKinley working hours survey, which polled 2,600 UK employees from sectors such as banking and finance, also found that 75% of respondents felt obligated to work beyond their contracted hours.
The research also found:
- 81% of respondents work beyond their contracted hours.
- 32% of respondents believe they are productive during the extra hours they work.
- 42% of respondents in high-level positions are likely to work more than 10 hours over their contracted hours, compared to 21% of respondents in entry-level positions.
- 13% of respondents are compensated for working extra hours.
- 34% of respondents do not take a lunch break.
David Leithead, UK chief operations officer at Morgan McKinley, said: “Businesses are facing an alarming burnout and need to evolve work practices. During the day, many employees don’t take any kind of lunch break. Then three quarters of them feel obligated to work beyond their contracted hours, yet they don't feel that is productive. And when they do finally leave the office, they are always on-call.
"If not managed carefully, these factors can cause employee stress and burnout, and poor business performance.”
