Royal Mail employees have called off their planned strike for 4 November as a result of an agreement being made on changes to pay, pensions and job security between the Royal Mail Group and the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

A statement from the two parties said they had made progress in talks, which allowed the strike action to be cancelled.

The union, which represents 115,000 Royal Mail employees, has however been allowed to keep the threat of a strike open until 20 November.

Royal Mail amended the proposed reforms to its defined benefit (DB) pension scheme in September. In July, the CWU rejected a 8.6% pay rise over three years for 125,000 Royal Mail employees.

The newly privatised organisation has agreed to improve its pay and reward offer, introduce a separate pension agreement and extend legal protections for staff beyond the current three-year offer.

The joint statement said: “Both parties will now clear diaries to ensure all our efforts are focused on reaching an agreement by Wednesday 13 November.”
