Steve Moore (pictured), HR manager at Hymans Robertson, explains what it means to be recognised with two Employee Benefits awards.
The organisation won ‘Best flexible benefits plan – smaller employer’ and ‘Best workplace savings benefits’ at the Employee Benefits Awards 2013.
What has winning an Employee Benefits award meant to you?
This is the first time the HR team at Hymans Robertson have entered into an award, and we were not sure what to expect. When we found out we had been shortlisted for two categories, we were delighted.
On the night, the table included a range of [staff] from Hymans Robertson, who have contributed in some way to our employee benefits: members of the HR team who manage our benefits, our in-house graphics designer and internal communications manager, who helps us to promote our benefits to our employees, and senior stakeholders who have supported what we have done.
I have never seen eight of our [staff] punch the air and scream as loud as we did when our name was read out as the winners!
What have you done to communicate your Employee Benefits award win to your organisation and to employees?
As soon as we found out we had won the awards, I sent an email to our leadership team while we were at the Employee Benefits Awards, and the replies came back quickly with as much excitement.
First thing the following morning, a newsflash communication was sent to everyone in the organisation highlighting how significant a win this was for us. Since then, we have mentioned it in our annual staff meeting, our annual internal review, at roadshow sessions that the senior leadership team hold at various points in the year, on our website and, arguably most crucially, to people who are looking to join us as new members of the organisation.
Perhaps the best way we have communicated [our success] is to display the award trophies in the reception at each of our offices.
What has the award meant to the organisation and to employees?
Our employees are thrilled that what we do internally has been so well received in the outside world. Our in-house benefits survey shows that [staff] appreciate what is on offer at Hymans Robertson, with 94% of respondents seeing their benefits as meeting or exceeding their needs.
[Staff] are proud to work for Hymans Robertson, which is demonstrated in our employee engagement survey, and the benefits that we offer to our employees are carefully considered and matched to their needs, which is very much appreciated.
What would you say to other employers to encourage them to enter the Employee Benefits Awards 2014?
[Employers should not] assume that people won’t be interested in what is happening in [their] business, and [they should not] fall into the trap of thinking that what other organisations are offering is better than what [they] have to offer. If nothing else, entering the Employee Benefits Awards will make [employers] take stock of what [they] do and why [they] do it, and what [they] learn from other organisations will always help [them] to build further what [they] are doing.
Enter the Employee Benefits Awards 2014. The entry deadline is 18 December.
