MPs’ expenses called into question

Sir Philip Mawer, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, has called for further restraints on MPs’ expenses  and says that sharp differences are not easily explicable.

He has reportedly written to the Senior Salaries Review Body calling for the rules that govern MPs’ free housing and other expenses to be tightened.

According to an interview in The Times, Sir Mawer’s main criticism is aimed at ministers who are given free accommodation in their constituency and still claim further allowances to help them afford to keep a second home in London.
