Walmart rewards frontline employees with $300 bonus

US supermarket chain Walmart will reward its hourly paid employees with an additional bonus to recognise them for their efforts during the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

The June 2020 bonus payment, will see full-time employees receive $300 (£242) and part-time employees $150 (£121). Assistant managers in Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs will also receive a $400 (£322) bonus, while truck drivers will receive a $300 (£242).

This is the third bonus reward that has been paid out to Walmart front-line employees, with previous payments being made in April 2020 and March 2020. The bonus scheme has cost Walmart an estimated $390 million (£314 million).

All employees who were employed within the organisation by 5 June 2020 will be eligible for the bonus.

John Furner, president at Walmart US, said: “Walmart and Sam’s Club associates continue to do remarkable work, and it’s important we reward and appreciate them. All across the country, they’re providing Americans with the food, medicine and supplies they need, while going above and beyond the normal scope of their jobs,  diligently sanitising facilities, making customers and members feel safe and welcome, and handling difficult situations with professionalism and grace.”

“With today’s associate bonus announcement of $390 million, Walmart has committed more than $935 (£754m) million in bonuses for associates so far this year.”
