Cadent accredited as fertility-friendly employer

Cadent offers company car scheme to its employeesGas distribution network Cadent has received accreditation from Fertility Matters at Work (FMAW) following the launch of its dedicated fertility support policy.

The firm, which employs more than 6,000 staff, implemented the policy for individuals going through fertility treatment, allowing paid time off to attend their own or their partner’s fertility appointments.

As well as having a dedicated policy in place for all employees, Cadent introduced guidance documents and e-learning for line managers and staff, aiming to raise awareness of fertility issues and give staff the capability to offer support to their direct reports. The business is also preparing to assign staff as fertility champions throughout the business.

According to Cadent, Kelly-Anne Morris, regulatory specialist and co-fertility lead, and Liz Brand, assurance manager and co-fertility lead, helped to drive the new policies. Both had experienced infertility and wanted to inspire change internally.

As part of the accreditation, the firm’s employees were given access to fertility awareness and support training workshops, e-learning modules for both staff and managers, and a virtual or in person internal panel discussion hosted by FMAW, as well as additional guidance, support and training.

Morris said: “The topic of infertility is becoming much less of a taboo subject at Cadent. People are now more likely to have a conversation with their line manager and colleagues if they feel they will be supported with the journey. To have an open culture where issues like this can be discussed openly by our employees, knowing there is support, has been game changing.

“We have a number of people who have previously shared their infertility story throughout the company to highlight that many of us may be going through something similar or know of someone who is. This received a great response and encouraged people to talk about their own experiences.”
