Something for the weekend: Although financial compensation is the norm for the majority of job roles, cruise line organisation MSC Cruises is taking an alternative approach for its new tea and cake taster position, offering to pay the successful applicant in Yorkshire tea and a variety of cakes.
The tea and cake taster position, which is advertised on the organisation’s website, will see the successful applicant employed aboard the North Sea-based MSC Magnifica on a temporary seven-day contract from April 2018. Accommodation is included with the job, while remuneration consists of a daily wage of tea and cake.
The successful candidate’s duties will include ensuring that the tea served on-board is made correctly and paired with the right condiments; advising guests on how to make the perfect cup of tea in their cabins; checking that all cakes served are light and fluffy; and ensuring that a variety is available for guests at the on-board restaurants. The tea and cake taster will also be required to offer recommendations on the ideal accompaniments to a cup of tea.
According to the job advert, the ideal candidate must be passionate about a good cup of tea, have a sweet tooth and have sea legs in order to obtain the coveted position. The full list of preferred characteristics for the new taster are:
- Must be passionate about a good cup of tea.
- Have a developed palate.
- Must have a sweet tooth.
- Must have sea legs or be willing to acquire them.
- Be able to host a good tea party.
- Have a relaxed approach to life.
- No other cakifications required.
The advert reads:
“MSC Cruises is looking for an individual with a sweet tooth who enjoys a proper brew. The position, onboard MSC Magnifica, will involve rigorous testing of the popular Yorkshire Tea, as well as hours spent ensuring the cakes are practically perfect in every way. In return, the chosen Tea Taster will benefit from a free seven-day cruise aboard our extraordinary ship, MSC Magnifica where he/she will be able to enjoy our extended list of onboard entertainment from its plush 1,200 seat theatre to its spectacular casino. Job starts April 2018 for a seven-day contract. Accommodation will be provided, as well as a daily wage of tea and cake.”
