Amy Davies: What are the benefits of offering enhanced parental leave?

Our people make us who we are. WeĀ nurtureĀ andĀ developĀ talent across our teams and are grateful to our colleagues for their time and energy. We areĀ proudĀ to have such an incredibleĀ Superdrug family.

At Superdrug, we understand the impact a work-life balance has on general wellbeing and feel strongly about supporting the family lives of our employees.

We recognise how difficult it is to juggle childcare and careers and believe that to truly drive equality in the workplace, we need to break down the barriers to equality at home. One of the key focuses of our Gender Equality employee network is around childcare, as this still tends to fall disproportionately to the female in the family. We saw this reinforced throughout the pandemic, where women tended to be juggling home schooling and childcare of infants around work more often than their male counterparts.

In 2016, we launched our enhanced parental leave package in recognition of the unique challenges each family faces. This offers paid leave during the first nine months.

Allowing our teams to play an active role in their childrens’ lives means we focus on all caregivers, understanding that not all family dynamics are the same. This is especially important to me on a personal level as my husband and I split childcare 50/50. In 2021, we ran a parentsā€™ panel featuring four fathers and different families to ignite the conversation within our various teams about the roles fathers play. We also ran a parenting during the pandemic session and a breaking the gender bias session to give parents the tools to tackle difficult conversations with their children.

We also have a number of other family-friendly wellbeing policies in place. Team members receive 30% off our online doctor service, and our nurse clinics have partnered with Aviva to deliver pensions upskills across the business to help employees plan for their future. We provide a discounts platform so staff and their families can save on their everyday spending and we offer life assurance cover for all team members at one times annual salary to ensure loved ones are protected should the worst happen.
