Health and beauty retailers Superdrug and Savers have received a bronze award in Stonewall’s UK Workplace Equality Index.

Charity for LGBTQ+ rights Stonewall launched the Workplace Equality Index to recognise employers which are committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace and are supporting LGBTQ+ staff to be themselves at work.

Last year, the retailers, who are owned by AS Watson Health and Beauty UK, joined Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme. This was part of a commitment to ensure they continue to implement inclusive practices and policies that allow LGBTQ+ employees to bring their full selves to work and thrive in the workplace.

Superdrug also launched an initiative to encourage staff to unlearn negative and harmful beliefs, biases, and stereotypes, and to celebrate diversity and inclusion within the workplace. Its Unlearn from Superdrug initiative, which stemmed from its employee networks, builds on the organisation’s existing diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy called Everyone Matters and aims to educate employees on different personal experiences and identities to understand that everyone is unique.

Amy Davies, people director at AS Watson Health and Beauty UK, said: “11% of our staff identify themselves as from the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re proud to over index in attracting people from this community. Diversity, equity, and inclusion remain an important priority for us as a business. We’re honoured to have received the bronze award as part of Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index and are looking forward to working on our strategy and development areas over the coming months.”
