Retailers in Scotland are more generous in terms of pay reviews and benefit provision than those in England and Wales.
Three-quarters of retail employees in Scotland were offered a pay rise in the last year, with 38% receiving a raise of 5% or more. In England, 57% were offered a rise, while 60% of Welsh employees received one, according to Barclaycard Businesses’ Retail in detail survey, which questioned more than 1,000 retailers across the country.
Scottish employees also receive more benefits than those in other regions. Some 57% of Scottish employers offer additional perks compared to 47% in England and 53% in Wales.
The research also found that the most commonly-offered benefit by retailers was a discount on products, offered by 56%, followed by bonuses (46%) and flexible working arrangements (41%).
While 58% of retailers have increased pay levels†in the last year, 42% of employee salaries have risen by more than 5%, which indicates that retailers are rewarding staff above the rate of inflation.
