ONS data shows average earnings growth is unchanged

Labour market figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the growth in average earnings, both excluding and including bonuses, is unchanged and that the recent growth in the unemployment rate is levelling off.

For November 2006, growth in average earnings, excluding bonuses, increased by 3.7%, unchanged from the previous month. Including bonuses, the increase was 4.1%, also unchanged from the previous month.

The Labour Market Statistics from the ONS show that the unemployment rate was 5.5%, down 0.1 on the quarter but up 0.4 over the year. The number of unemployed people fell by 29,000 over the quarter but increased by 139,000 over the year to reach 1.67m.

The employment rate for people of working age was 74.6% for the three months ending in November 2006, down 0.1 over the quarter but unchanged over the year.
