Tesco staff given a day’s paid leave as Christmas thank you

Tesco employees are to receive a day’s paid leave and additional discounts on their in-store shopping as a reward for their hard work during the busy Christmas trading period.
All 268,065 employees across the stores, head office and distribution centres, will get a day’s paid leave to use as their own ‘Personal Day’ over the Christmas trading period, in an investment worth £10.3 million.
In addition, all staff will also be given ‘Thank You’ discount vouchers, the amount given depending on the length of service.
All staff will also be entitled to special offers on products sold in store, including discounts of £5 for every £25 spent on clothes, £5 for £15 spent on books and £2.50 for £10 spent on toys and games.
The savings and discount vouchers are available to all employees across the stores, head office and distribution centres, and amount to £25.4million worth of potential savings.
They are offered in addition to existing benefits and eligible employees can use their staff privilege cards to gain an extra 10% discount at the till, up to a maximum annual saving of £712.50.
Louise Pocock, UK benefits manager at Tesco, said: “Following our aim to make Tesco a great place to work, we always strive to increase and enhance benefits offered to all members of staff.
“We are very aware that this Christmas and next year will be one of the tightest times for finances and for this reason, Tesco is committed to offering savings and discounts to staff throughout the year. “
Tesco’s staff privilege card, which gives savings to employees on purchases made in Tesco stores and online, was previously only available to staff with one year’s service, however, the supermarket extended its eligibility to staff with only six months service in July, to allow them to use it for their Christmas shopping.
The store also awarded 192,835 employees with £92 million worth of free shares in July this year as part of its Shares in Success scheme.
